Behaviour Support: Inappropriate V’s Appropriate Things To Say The following activity was developed to support a child’s ability to reflect upon comments that they make and the impact of these. The activity includes • 1 x illustration of child with open and happy mouth (symbolizing things a child can say) • 1 x illustration of a shocked child with mouth closed (symbolizing things a child shouldn’t say) • Question/Statement cards that children can cut out which contains a comment that either can be pasted on the mouth open (something nice/good/okay/acceptable to say) or pasted on the mouth closed (something you shouldn’t say as its mean/not nice) This activity also includes some spare cards for either the teacher, students (group or individual) to write on as examples of things they feel are appropriate/inappropriate to support the development of insight and judgment. This behavior workbook is specifically designed for teenagers and adolescents and has been developed utilizing Cognitive Behavioural Therapy principles. This workbook primarily focuses on emotions, behaviours, anger management and self-care. Students with anger management difficulties often represent a significant number of referrals for school counselors. They are often referred because they are internalising their anger (depressed, socially withdrawn) or the majority are externalising their anger by demonstrating behavioural concerns. Whether students internalise or externalise anger, supporting them to learn healthy ways to express and cope with their strong emotions. Coping strategies and skills are behavioural reactions that an individual utilizes to cope, deal and adapt with difficult situations. Coping strategies come in many forms – some might be helpful, and some are unhelpful. This resource includes 42 cards which include a variety of helpful and unhelpful coping skills which are included on individual cards. These can be discussed and used to explore and differentiate between what are healthy and helpful coping strategies verses unhelpful and unhealthy coping strategies. This framework is based on trauma-informed principles and knowledge. This framework is intentionally designed to teach and to shape the individual’s behaviour within consistent limits using non-blaming, non-shaming and empowering communication. This trauma-informed framework of support also encourages discussing consequences that are clearly connected to the individual’s behaviour, yet also uses words that encourage thinking and the development of insight whilst preserving relational connections and attunement. The strategies included are divided into Ecological, Interactional and Skill Development. We explore tips for keeping you safe with strangers, when you are out on the town as well as exploring the risks associated with texting. This lesson has been created to include key information in a easy to read manner with visuals to support information retention. Depending on the age, developmental level and key learning needs, Teachers, Parents, School Counsellors and other Allied Health Professionals should use their insight and judgement to determine whether the information contained in this lesson is suitable and appropriate for each individual student. This lesson is built into a scaffold learning system with a total of 6 lessons. You can choose to use this lesson in isolation, however should you with to further build the knowledge around relationships and sexuality, feel free to check out the remainder of the lessons.
